It follows the city's unsuccessful bid for the 2012 games.
Madrid is now an official candidate city to host the 2016 Olympics. In a ceremony held in Athens yesterday, Madrid was revealed to have come in second behind Tokyo in the application with a rating of 8.4.
Other confirmed candidates to take place in the race are Chicago, Rio de Janeiro, Prague, Doha and Bakú.
Observers say that if Barack Obama becomes President the candidature of Chicago will be greatly enforced.
