Two ETA prisoners due for release see their terms extended by ten years

The so-called 'Perot doctrine' is being applied in both cases, but their defence lawyers are expected to appeal.
The Penal Hall of the National Court has extended the prison sentence against the ETA prisoner, Pedro Odriozola, who was sentenced initially to 30 years in prison and who was due to be released on July 2 this year. He was arrested on January 28, 1988 on charges of belonging to an armed gang and now faces another ten years inside with the application of the so-called ‘Parot doctrine’.

This refers to a sentence of the Supreme Court in Spain in February 2006 regarding Henry Parot, which allowed for those charged under the previous 1973 Penal Code to have their sentences extended as prison terms could be considered to run successively and not consecutively as the maximum imprisonment time on terrorist charges was extended to 40 years.

The National Court has also considered that the Parot doctrine should also apply to Inés del Río who was also sent to jail initially for the 30 year then maximum term, and who was also due out on July 2. The prisoners defence lawyers are expected to appeal the decision.
