The future of the Partido Popular, ahead of their congress in Valencia, and the continuing lorry drivers protests lead the Spanish papers this Monday.

El Mundo notes that the lorry drivers from two associations who are continuing with their strike are heading towards Madrid. The paper says that hundreds of self-employed drivers are involved in the new protest. However the paper also notes the news this morning that they are being detained on the roads by the Guardia Civil with more than 200 held in the early hours at Benavente in Zamora, stopping them from reaching Madrid.
ABC says that thousands of lorry drivers are threatening to bring chaos to Madrid today, with 30,000 drivers called to protest.

El Mundo leads with a new opinion poll on the future of the opposition Partido Popular and headlines that Gallardón now has a ten point lead over Mariano Rajoy among the PP voters. The paper says that he is gaining increased support to be candidate in 2012, while support for Rato, Rajoy and Aguirre has been falling.
El País leads with the PP also and says that most of the party barons are supporting Mariano Rajoy for 2012. The paper says the regional leaders of the party are defending dialogue to try and widen consensus.
ABC says that Rajoy wants Mayor Oreja to leave congress as a candidate for Europe. All the papers leading with the PP as the party’s conference gets underway in Valencia.
Público has carried out its own poll of PP voters and concluded that most of them, 68%, want the party to move to the centre and reach agreements with the government. Nearly 40% believe that Rajoy should have resigned after the elections, and among the possible successors it gives Gallardón 26.8% support, Aguirre 13.7% and Rato, 8%.

ABC notes that the PSOE Socialist Party owes 62.3 million €, four times the amount of the P.P. debt. The paper says the Socialists’ debt is 43% of that of all the parties together.

El Mundo notes that Spanish troops have killed six insurgents in Afghanistan and also that a Spanish soldier has died in a traffic accident in Lebanon. ABC gives the Lebanon accident prominence and says that dead man is originally from Colombia and that two others were injured in the accident.

El País notes that protests in among farmers in Argentina have been getting increasingly violent, and that the Government of Cristina Fernández is in crisis.

El Mundo has an interview with Miguel Sebastián, the Minister for Industry. The paper headlines his claim that ‘The quicker it falls, the quicker will be the recovery’, referring to the economy. He also said that experience says that the country must make the most of the moment to modernise and gain competiveness and productivity, so it will emerge from the crisis much stronger.

El País considers that the toughening of the government’s immigration policy is moving the Socialist party PSOE away from its traditional supporters and towards that of the P.P. Financial incentives to get unemployed immigrants to leave, and tougher controls on how relatives of immigrants already here can be admitted are under consideration.

La Vanguardia in Barcelona leads with the headline that Valencia is demanding better communications with Cataluña.
The other Barça paper, El Periódico, says that rectors of the Universities in the city are suggesting they merge which they claim would improve education in the region.

El Mundo has large front page photo of José Tomás, the in form and in fashion bullfighter who was making his second appearance at Las Ventas in Madrid. The paper describes it as a glorious afternoon but notes that he was gored in his right buttock and was carried off to the surgery after being carried thought ‘la puerta grande’ in celebration.
El País also has a dramatic photo of the matador being held in the air on the horns of the bull.
ABC says the blood and glory José Tomas – he cut three ears but was gored three times.

There is coverage in El Mundo for Rafa Nadal, who has become the first Spaniard to win on grass in 36 years. He picked up the title at Queens yesterday.
El País considers that Rafa Nadal is now flying towards Wimbledon.

And finally,
David Villa, the star goal-scorer from the Spanish side in Euro 2008, writes for Público today about the team and also about the promotion to the Primera Liga of Sporting Gijón.
