Football and large front page photos dominate the Spanish front pages today – with the press runs halted by the late result and the penalties.
El Mundo headlines Casillas breaks the curse. The Spanish goalkeeper Iker Casillas was named man of the match after saving two penalties. The curse is the fact that Spain had not beaten Italy in an official competition since 1920. The side also notoriously poor normally when it comes to penalties.
El Mundo has a photo of Casillas in action and says that Spain will play Russia in her first semi final in 24 years.
El País has a photo of Fabregas and Casillas celebrating the win, and headlines that Spain has broken the jinx, and that Casillas was the hero for stopping two penalties.
ABC says that Spain and Casillas have beaten history, and notes that the Manager Luis Aragonés could not bear to watch the penalties. ABC also considers Spain was ‘very superior’ to the Italians in the 120 minutes of the match.
Público takes its back page for sport round to the front page and says that Spain has broken the curse.
El Periodico de Catalunya has the headline ‘Avanti España’.

El Mundo also notes that some Sub-Saharans used the penalties to try and make another mass crossing of the border into Melilla last night.
El País concentrates on an earlier attack and says it was a human avalanche to enter Melilla, with dozens of immigrants getting across, but with 50 caught and returned to Morocco.

El Mundo says the PP leader Mariano Rajoy used football in his closing speech at the PP conference – saying the PP is in the final and is going to win. The paper says Rajoy said the government does not know what to do, while it also notes that the PP leader in the Madrid region, Esperanza Aguirre, says she feels like a verse left out of a poem, having lost influence in the Congress.
El País says that Rajoy has shown off his success with Agurirre, who had become the leader of those critical of him. The paper notes she is now the forgotten verse.
ABC leads with Rajoy’s first speech after re-election as party leader and says he wants a PP for everyone against a Government which lies and rambles. The paper says he proclaimed his independence and promised to make use of everyone as Spain ‘needs us’.
La Vanguardia says that Rajoy has put the economy at the centre of his attacks on the Government.

El Mundo notes that 16 intellectuals have come up with what they call a manifesto for a common language. They want the parliament to guarantee the teaching of Castellano across all the regions of Spain. The paper invites its readers to join the initiative by registering online.

Little space for international stories today.
El País notes that Saudi Arabia has called for an end to the speculation on the markets in Crude Oil.
The paper also notes that the Ministry of Defence is buying 100 armed vehicles for use in the Lebanon and Afghanistan.
