The ex Mayor has been sent to jail without bail by the instruction judge in the Astapa corruption case, Isabel Conejo.
The ex Socialist Mayor of Estepona, Antonio Barrientos, is reported by El País to have authorised the payment of 1.2 million € for irregular building works in the municipality which had not passed through the correct legal channels.
On Tuesday the ex Mayor announced that he would also be resigning as a local councillor following his arrest on charges of influence peddling, bribery, mis-use of public funds and money laundering.
One of his lawyers tells the paper that Barrientos is ‘very focussed’ and better in prison that he was when being held in the police cells. ‘He has the strength of a person who is unaware of doing anything which deserves reproach’.
