A mixture of stories on the front pages, but the state of the economy is there somewhere.
El Mundo leads with the story of the naming of the new Spanish ambassador to the United States, Jorge Dezcaller.
The paper tells its readers that when he was head of the Spanish Secret Service CNI, he told Ana Palacio, the then Foreign Minister that she had got it right when she said that ETA was responsible for the Madrid Train Bombings. The paper says the two talked on at least seven occasions at the time.
Now El Mundo considers the Socialists are rewarding the man who set the PP Government into the largest banana skin in the history of Spanish diplomacy.
El País leads with the revelation that the Government wants to submit the body which oversees the judiciary, the General Council for Judicial Power, to the control of Congress. Such a reform would oblige the members of the Council to appear before the deputies, and would mean changes to the Penal Code and access to the judiciary.
El Mundo devotes half its front page to its campaign to protect Castellano and shows the photos of eight academics who have signed up to the initiative, described by the paper as ‘grand cultural names’.
ABC says that parents are debating their manifesto on the subject in Madrid.
El País has a front page photo of Silvio Berlusconi with his wrists crossed as if he were in handcuffs. ‘Many prosecutors want to see me like this’, is the quoted caption. The paper says hundreds of businessmen booed the Italian leader after he insulted the courts.
El Mundo notes that Esperanza Aguirre has dismissed those members of her cabinet who gave their support to the party leader, Mariano Rajoy. The paper says the most repeated phrase from Aguirre since the party conference in Valencia where she saw her position side-stepped – was ‘It’s not going to stay like this’.
ABC says she has made the changes to ‘streamline’ the Madrid administration.
El Páis gives prominence to the complaints of the Mari Luz Cortés family following the mere fining of Judge Tirado. It was his oversight which led to the man suspected of killing their daughter still be on the streets, despite him being found guilty of an earlier paedophile charge.
José Blanco has accused the Bank of Spain of offering ‘the most conservative recipes’ in the fight against the crisis, according to El Mundo. El País notes that Brussels is demanding a ‘serious adjustment’ by Spain to avoid a deficit.
ABC leads with the European Central Bank President, Trichet, saying he will raise interest rates, as real estate promoters in Spain have made an appeal to the Prime Minister for help.
La Vanguardia says that Mariano Rajoy has now started attacking the Prime Minister on the state of the economy.
Público says that 90,000 homes will not be able to meet their mortgage payments this year.
Público leads today with what it calls the last flight of Aznar. It’s a play on words as Mariano Rajoy says the Aznar era is over, and comes as the previous PP Prime Minster is jetting about the country on a private plane belonging to Dionisio Gutiérrez who has admitted his ‘deep friendship’ with José María.
El Mundo tells us that Congress has asked the Government to lead measures in the European Union to support the cause and protection of the grand apes.
El País notes that Andalucia is to legally protect a law for euthanasia, which should be passed next summer.
Many papers note the naming of Margaret Atwood as the winner of this year’s Prince of Asturias prize for literature.
And finally,
Plenty of coverage ahead of tonight’s Euro 2008 match against Russia. Spain is one step from the summit – says El País.
