Despite the rains in the month of May there is less water stored in local reservoirs than at this time last year.
The Province of Málaga is facing the driest time of the year with less water in local reservoirs than a year ago. Reservoirs are now at 28% capacity, compared to 35% at this time a year ago.
The Cuenca Mediterránea Water board say the reduction represents 34.8 billion litres less this year, or 43% of Málaga city’s annual needs.

However 174 billion litres are being stored, with the smaller La Concepción reservoir in Marbella at full capacity.

Improvements being carried out to the pipeline which links the western Costa del Sol and Málaga city are to be completed in September 2009 and were put out to tender by the Junta last week.

The drought decree in place for Málaga city and the Guadalhorce Valley is likely to be extended to the eastern section of the province as the La Viñuela reservoir continues to supply the city.
