The Spanish football squad which has won the EURO 2008 championship was at the Zarzuela Palace yesterday morning for a reception from the King and Queen, together with the Prince and Princess of Asturias.
The event was full of smiles, hugs, long chats and jokes, with the players all on form despite many spending the early hours in a Madrid discotec.
Outgoing trainer Luis Aragonés received an effusive hug from the King, and Prince Felipe thought that the cup still smelt of champagne.
In the final round up of praise for the winning Spanish football team later in the morning. the Spanish Prime Minister, José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, welcomed the victorious squad to the Moncloa Palace in Madrid.
Zapatero said we were witnessing ‘the start of the best of times for Spanish football’, and said that there had been a triumph of talent, strength and humility.
‘You have played great football, and shown that, sometimes, reality is better than dreams’, said the Prime Minister.
The team now looks ahead to the World Cup, and new manager, Vicente del Bosque, will be official presented in the next few days. He will debut with a friendly match against Denmark in Copenhagen on August 20 and also lead the squad to the Copa Confederaciones in 2009.
