His written resignation as both Mayor and councillor was dealt with in a special council meeting on Friday, which lasted just five minutes.

Antonio Barrientos formally ended his time as Mayor and councillor of Estepona on Friday when an extraordinary council meeting was held to deal with the issue. The meeting lasted for just five minutes and came 14 days after the Astapa corruption case broke and the instruction judge Isabel Conejo, ordered prison without bail for Barrientos. He faces charges of bribery, influence peddling, misuse of public funds, fraud and money laundering.

The Partido Popular opposition in the town continue to demand that the Town Hall now be dissolved and new local elections be held, but for now the ex Mayor has been replaced by the candidate who was number 12 on the Socialist list at the municipal elections, Sergio López.

Acting Mayor, Rafael Montesinos from the Partido Andalucista, has opened a period of dialogue so that the councillors can decide on ‘the best possible mayor’.
