It comes after the vessels cargo of scrap metal has been removed.
Ecologists say that work to remove the remains of the wreck of the ‘New Flame’ cargo vessel off Gibraltar is now underway.
It comes after six boats from the Titan Salvage company have completed the removal of 30,000 tons of scrap metal being carried by the ship, and so now the boat herself, already in three sections, is to be removed.

The spokesman of the Verdemar-Ecologistas en Acción group, Antonio Muñoz, has called on the European Union to analyse the water in the area to see if there has been any pollution from the vessel and her cargo, some of which the ecologists believe is now on the sea bed.

The ‘New Flame’ collided with the tanker, ‘Torm Gertrud’, in the Algeciras Bay on August 12 2007, and since then several amounts of oil and tar have appeared on local beaches, allegedly from the vessel.

The waters certainly should be checked for pollution as there is a large lump of manure to the north of Gibraltar.
