Luis Fernando Cartagena was originally found guilty of the misuse of public funds in 2002.

An ex Partido Popular Orihuela councillor has entered prison at the start of a four year prison sentence.

Luis Fernando Cartagena is now in the Villena jail to serve his time after being found guilty of the misuse of public funds and the falsification of documents. The ex public works councillor is reported to have suffered a nervous crisis after his first supper in the jail, and spent his first night in the medical wing.

He was found guilty in the Provincial Court in March 2002, and that sentence was confirmed two years later in the Supreme Court. He has spent the last four months hoping that the Government would grant him a pardon, but the Cabinet finally rejected that request last May 23.
