1348: Pedro IV of Aragón breaks up the Aragonesa Union in the battle of Épila
1454: Enrique IV of Castile is proclaimed King of the region after the death of his father, Juan II of Castle, in Valladolid
1535: Carlos I conquers Tunisia in an armed expedition
1847: Spain signs a treaty of peace and friendship with the Bolivian government which recognises the independence of the new country
1901: International regattas held in Santander
1930: The Palomar airport opens in Zaragoza
1950: The Bank of Spain restricts the amount of money that can be withdrawn by travellers – those leaving Spain have a 2,000 peseta limit and those arriving 10,000.
1953: Trade agreement between Spain and Chile. Spain supplies machinery and industrial equipment in exchange of copper and other raw materials
1962: Several communists are arrested in Bilbao on their arrival from Prague
1970: Three workers die in clashes with police in Granada during a demonstration over working conditions
1972: Nearly 80 die and more than 120 are wounded in a train crash in Lebrija, Sevilla. One of the train drivers is thought to have ignored a red light
1979: Severiano Ballesteros wins the British Golf Open
1981: The King and Queen of Spain decide not to attend the wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer, after the announcement that the couple will start their honeymoon in Gibraltar
1982: The first autonomous government in Andalucía is made up of eight Socialists and three independents
1986: ETA uses anti-tank grenades to attack the Ministry of Defence offices in Madrid. Ten people are injured
1988: Spanish tenor José Carreras returns to the stage after being treated for leukaemia in the United States
1997: National Court sentences a group of three ETA activists to 109 years in jail for an attempt on the life of King Juan Carlos.
