Many of the papers look ahead to the meeting on Wednesday between the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.

El Mundo leads with the headline that the leader of the Partido Popular, Mariano Rajoy, has offered the Prime Minister, Zapatero, ‘help’ in the face of the crisis. However the paper notes that neither the Government nor the opposition contemplate a grand economic agreement being reached when the leaders meet on Wednesday. El Mundo says they will be happy if the meeting has partial agreements on Justice and Terrorism.
El País is more positive on the talks and says that Zapatero and Rajoy will offer a pact to put an end to the ‘crispación’ – political tension – which was the key point between the two parties in the last legislature. The paper says that there will be cross party agreements in all areas except one – the economy.

El Mundo highlights a quote reportedly made to Zapatero by the President of the Catalan Government, José Montilla – ‘Who loves you most, will make you suffer’ – reported to have been made when the two leaders were discussing the funding of the region.
ABC leads with the story and says that Montilla is standing up to Zapatero and has thrown out the regional finance plans drawn up by Pedro Solbes. It has another quote – ‘José Luis, we love you a lot, but we love Cataluña more’.
La Vanguardia and El Periódico de Catalunya both lead with the position of Montilla, as you might expect.

El Mundo is among the papers which highlights what it calls the drama and emotion of the Tour de France. It has a photo of the Spanish rider, Óscar Pereiro who fell yesterday and is out of the race.

El Mundo notes that one of the Madrid train bombing suspects who has now been released on the orders of the Supreme Court, Basel Ghalyoun, has asked for asylum in Spain to avoid his extradition to Syria. The paper also highlights what it sees as gaps in the Asturias part of the case, linked to the explosives used.

The restarting of ETA’s so-called summer campaign – with the explosion of four bombs in Cantabria is mentioned in El Mundo which reports two slight injuries.
El País says that ETA terror has returned, and shows a photo of a family affected by one of the blasts.
ABC has a photo of a policeman on a beach with a metal detector and says that the beaches of Laredo and Noja were affected.

El País reports that Numancia is not giving in to local construction projects. The paper says that several new projects are threatening the ancient Celtic remains at the site with national and international organisations objecting to plans from Soria City Hall to compulsory purchase 120 hectares of land.

ABC notes in business news that Enel has accused Entrecanales of not meeting its obligations in contracts with Endesa.

Público goes its own way today and dedicates its front page to the ill-treatment of animals in Spain, especially during the fiestas of the summer. The paper promises to highlight how animals are cruelly treated this summer in fiestas across the country. The paper says that between now and the end of September there will be more than 4,000 shows where bulls are humiliated.

In international stories:
El País reports that thousands of people have demonstrated in Colombia against the FARC, as part of a global protest. The paper shows Ingrid Betancort, the recently released hostage on stage in Paris with Spanish singer Miguel Bosé.

El País also notes that Democratic Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama, has called for an urgent strengthening of troops in Afghanistan. He made the call after meeting with the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai.

ABC tells us that Madrid is to host the World Youth Day in 2011, with the news announced by the Pope over the weekend.

And finally,
Nothing but praise in the Spanish press today for the appearance of Leonard Cohen at the Bennicàssim FIB festival yesterday. El Mundo has a small front page photo of the singer.
