The papers are dominated, as you might expect by the arrest of the Serbian leader in Bosnia, Radovan Karadzic.
El Mundo leads with the story describing him as the most searched-for war criminal in the world. The paper says that after more than a decade on the run he was arrested last night in Belgrade.
He is accused of the killing of thousands of Bosnian Muslims in Sarajevo as well as the killings in Srebrenica.
El País says the 63 year old has spent 13 years on the run and will now appear before the International Criminal Court.
El País leads with the news that the President of Equatorial Guinea, Teodoro Obiang, has cancelled his planned visit to Spain which should have started on Friday, after he heard that neither the King nor the Prime Minister will be changing their agendas to meet him at the airport.
Staying with international stories, El Mundo notes that the United States democratic party candidate, Barack Obama, has recognised improvements in Iraq and has spoken with the Iraqi Government about the ‘horizon’ of a troop withdrawal.
El País has a front page photo of Obama, and considers that he has taken the presidential campaign to Iraq, noting he met for nearly an hour with the Iraqi Prime Minister, Nuri al Maliki. The paper says both considered the need for a rapid withdrawal of the United States troops.
ABC has a front page photo of a blown up bus in China, and says there is terrorism just 18 days ahead of the Olympic Games. The paper says the authorities do not know who was responsible for the attack which killed two and injured 14.
El Mundo notes that the President of Venezuela, Hugo Chávez, is upping the temperature before his planned meeting with King Juan Carlos later this week. It quotes him as saying ‘You know Juan Carlos that you are not going to shut me up’.
El Mundo notes that the Portuguese police has admitted their failure and have closed down the Madeleine Mc Cann case.
ABC meanwhile notes that the Spanish paedophile known as ‘nanysex’ has been sentenced to only 58 years in prison after sexually molesting five children. The paper says the sentence was not higher as the court did not consider his actions to be ‘aggression’.
Público goes its own way and headlines the Government’s plans to stop unwanted pregnancies. It reports that the number of pregnant adolescents in Spain has risen by 76% in five years, and that the Ministry of Health has called on the CIS, Centre for Sociological Investigation, to carry out what will be the first extensive research into the Spaniards’ sexual habits.
El Mundo tells us that the March 11th Madrid train bombing suspect who was released by the Supreme Court last week, Basel Ghalyoun, will be expelled to Syria today on a judge’s order.
El Mundo notes that the Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, is today celebrating the first 100 days of the new legislature with a meeting in a theatre in the Casa de Campo in Madrid. The paper says he has no complexes in doing so despite the announcement that the Spanish state accounts have now moved into the red. The paper looks ahead to this month’s numbers and says a deficit of 5 billion is on the way, with income from company taxes down by 17.6% and VAT down my 14%.
El País says that the there has been a brusque deficit in the public accounts.
ABC headlines the link between the 100 days and the public accounts moving into the red, and notes the numbers still do not reflect the cost of the government’s famous 400 € tax refund.
ABC says also that the Partido Popular is to ask for 7 billion € more for the funding of the regions.
And finally,
El País tells us that the soft water which has been keeping the jellyfish offshore this year following the heavy rains in the Spring, is losing its effect and large numbers are now being seen in the waters of the Mediterranean – especially between the Balearic Islands and Cataluña. Meanwhile huge Portuguese men of war with tentacles upto 12 metres long are reported in the local media off the coast of Cantabria.

Today's El Mundo front page.
