He becomes the third consecutive Spaniard to win the world's most famous cycling race.

Carlos Sastre has become the surprise third consecutive Spanish winner of the Tour de France, following the successes of Óscar Pereiro and Alberto Contador.

The last 243 km stage of the race on Sunday between Etampes and the Champs el Lycee was won by the Belgium rider Gert Steegmans in a final sprint for his Quick Step team, but Sastre was close enough behind thanks to the yellow jersey which he had in effect confirmed was his in Saturday’s time trial. It was there, where he was expected to lose the lead, but in fact only conceded 29 seconds to his main rival Cadel Evans.

Carlos Sastre Candil was born in Madrid in 1975, and rides for the CSC team. He started riding at the age of eight in the cycling school set up by his father, and since his debut in 1997 has only made six stage victories, half of them in the Tour de France.
