Algeciras port busy as Africans return home for the summer break

Despite the high numbers of travellers, the port is coping well with the demand.

Algeciras port has reported the first rush of travellers crossing the Strait back to Africa at the start of the summer break. More than 11,000 vehicles and 30,000 people made the crossing over the weekend at the start of the operation called ‘Paso del Estrecho’.

The number is in addition to the 461,650 people and 138,204 vehicles which have crossed to Africa from the port since June 15.

The port spokesman, Salvador Merelo, said the weekend demand was met without problems and both routes to Tangiers and Ceuta were running smoothly. However the mere numbers of travellers meant that some 400 vehicles had to wait some time during the afternoon and evening.
