The number is far lower than the last time that the Santiago fiesta created a long weekend.

A total of 21 people lost their lives on the roads of Spain over the past Santiago bank holiday weekend between 3pm on Friday and 8pm last night in 17 fatal accidents. A further nine people were seriously injured according to the data from the DGT traffic authorities.

The last time the bank holiday was in existence in 2005 the number of fatalities was far higher at 41.

The most serious accident was in the early hours of Sunday on the N-2 road at Fraga in Huesca where three members of the same family from Zaragoza lost their lives in a head-on collision between two cars.

There were long delays last night on many roads into Madrid which was one of the cities of Spain to celebrate the fiesta on Friday.
