It's thought that ETA were responsible for the small device which caused no injuries.

An explosive device went off on a beach in Torremolinos in the early hours of this morning without causing any injuries.

The small device went off at 20 minutes past midnight on the paseo marítimo in the La Carihuela district in the top tourist destination in Málaga province, between the Aloha Puerto and Timorsol hotels. The police, as yet, have not confirmed who they think may have placed the device, but it is almost certainly to be the work of Basque terrorists ETA. They have already claimed responsibility for four small and similar devices which exploded on the Cantabrian coast in the north of the country a week ago.

TEDEX explosives experts and National Police went to the scene to evaluate what had happened and to try and find explosive remains which may lead to their identification. The explosion caused a hole in the groud about a metre wide and some 40 cms deep.

It is usual for ETA to try and launch what they call a summer campaign against tourism, where, using generally very small devices they nevertheless manage to get international headlines designed to affect the Spanish tourist industry.

Yesterday ETA are thought to have been responsible for a much larger device of some 5 kilos of explosives which went off by roadworks on the A-8 motorway at Orio in Guipúzcoa. The blast caused no injuries but damaged six prefabricated huts and four vehicles.
