It follows the introduction of the new Penal Code last December.

100 people have been sent to prison for traffic offenses since the introduction of the new penal code in Spain allowed the authorities to toughen up on offenders. The number relates to when the law was introduced last December, upto June this year, and over that time there were as many as 26,800 sentences handed down.

The numbers were announced by the Road Safety Prosecutor, Bartolomé Vargas, who noted that the 100 people now in prison were there because they were repeat offenders, or had taken part in incidents of ‘singular seriousness’ related to excessive speed, drink driving or driving without a licence.

Of the 26,800 sentences only 230 were for speeding, a number so low because, according to Sr. Vargas, the Penal Code has set the speed limits so high. ‘Not many people go more than 200 km/hour on the motorway or more than 110km/hour in town.
