The annoucement of talks on the merger of British Airways and Iberia dominate most of the Spanish front pages today.

El Mundo has a large photo of the handshake between Fernando Conte, President of Iberia and Willie Walsh, Chairman of British Airways in Madrid yesterday. The paper says the merger was pushed forward by Iberia buying 10% of BA shares in secret.
Caja Madrid will be the main shareholder in the new airline according to the paper. El Mundo notes that BA shares rose 6% on the news, Iberia shares were up by 20%.
El País leads with the story and says that Iberia and British Airways unite to form the third largest airline in the world. The paper says the merger comes following the failure of BA to purchase Iberia, and that the operation has the blessing of both governments in London and Madrid.

El Mundo continues with its campaign against Catalan, and today leads with the headline that the new Catalan law only includes the right to study firstly in Castellano at the Primary level.
The paper says the law eliminates the theoretical right to choose the language. El Mundo says that Mariano Rajoy and the PP regional leaders have called on the Government to ‘remove any obstacle’ to Castellano.

And with another of its campaigns – the Madrid Train bombing conspiracy still in mind, EL Mundo today highlights the fact that the Ministry for the Interior has promoted the man who ordered the police report which linked ETA to the bombings be altered. Pedro Mélida is now the Superior Chief of Eastern Andalucia.

Talking conspiracy, El País notes that the COPE radio presenter Losantos have been found guilty of slander again. He has been ordered to pay 100,000 € to the ex Director of the ABC newspaper, but says he will appeal.
Público leads with the story and says it is triple penitence for Losantos – First he has to pay 100,000 € for insulting the ex newspaper director, Second he has to read the sentence against him on air three times, and Third he has to pay for the publication of the same in three national newspapers.
The ex ABC Director, José Antonio Zarzalejos, has commented that the owners of the COPE radio stations, the Spanish Bishops, are also morally responsible.

The extradition of Radovan Karadzic to The Hague leads the international stories, with El Mundo noting that Serbia has now made the move.
El País has a front page photo of demonstrators in Belgrade yesterday in support of Karadzic.

El País notes that the President of Colombia, Álvaro Uribe, has launched an offensive against the European network of the FARC guerrillas.

El Mundo notes the proposed law change in Britain where someone who has been abused by the partner, and then kills him, will face only manslaughter and not murder charges.

And back in Spain
The Minister for Industry has proposed reducing road speed limits on the roads into cities to save energy, while the Interior Minister, according to El Mundo, has disagreed. In fact Rubalcaba said that a study would need to be carried out first.
ABC headlines the new energy plans and calls them ‘operation light bulb’. The paper says that 49 million low energy light bulbs are to be given out by the government, and also notes the speed limit reduction by 20%. ABC also notes that there has been no dates set for the measures.

El País says that ETA has kept its summer campaign active despite the recent arrests of many members of the Basque terrorist group.

El Mundo tells us that the Chairman of Martinsa, previously reported to have plenty of other business interests and wealth, has now declared himself as a bankrupt.
Público notes that despite the crisis, profits of the main five banks in Spain are untouched. They have made more than 10 billion € over the first six months.

ABC has a front page photo of Prince Felipe with his older daughter, the Infanta Leanor. The picture was taken after a day at the regatta on Mallorca as the Spanish Royals enjoy their summer break.

And finally,
El País reports on new protection for pregnant women who now cannot be sacked from their jobs, even if they have kept their pregnancy secret from their employers.

How can quality airline BA be so stupid to merge with lousy airline Iberia . Best for the industry would be to see lousy companies like Iberia and Alitalia to go bust . BA is much better off by merging with Air France KLM , Lufthansa or Cathay . Probably the boards are getting big bonusses with this kiss of death.
