Spanish writer, Leopoldo Alas, dies at the age of 46

He died in a Madrid hospital today after a long illness.

Writer and journalist, Leopoldo Alas, has died. He passed away in hospital in Madrid from after a long illness at the age of just 46.
Born in Arnedo in La Rioja in 1962, his published his first book of stories at the age of 19 ‘África entera tocando el tam tam’ and moved across all literal stages with the novel ‘Bochorno’ arriving in 1991.

Long-time defender of gay rights, he collaborated with the El Mundo newspaper and had hosted a radio programme on sexual tendencies on Spanish National Radio since 2004.

He was the great- grandson of Leopoldo Alas ‘Clarin’, a celebrated Spanish writer born in 1852 whose most famous work was ‘La Regenta’.
