José Iñaki de Juana Chaos has served 21 years for 25 killings.
Released ETA prisoner, José Iñaki de Juana Chaos, has said he is a victim and has complained of the pressure that he and his family have been subjected to by the Spanish and French authorities, and has also mentioned ‘torture and political pressure’.
A letter written in his name was read out yesterday at a rally for the Movimiento pro Amnestia group which Chaos did not attend citing health problems.

The release of the man who was found guilty of killing 25 people and who is let out of jail after just 21 years has caused general consternation and none more so than among the families of ETA victims. He left the jail at Aranjuez at 7,26 yesterday morning, and some of the victims’ families were at the prison gates to insult him. For some his sarcastic smile as he drove past, was too much to take.

The Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega, commented that, like most Spaniards, the Government was repulsed that Chaos was on the streets, but she said ‘we are better because we respect the law’. She made her comments while on an official visit to Mexico.

National Court judge, Baltasar Garzón, a long-time fighter against ETA, said that the release was ‘a judicial decision which strictly meets the law’ and that we should respect that ‘like it or not’.
