The official confirmation came the day after he won the Olympic Gold medal.
Rafa Nadal is now officially the World Number One tennis player and becomes the 24th player to reach the top spot.
He takes over from Roger Federer who has proven invincible since July 25 2005 and comes as the man from Mallorca won the Olympic Gold on Sunday. He said it was an honour for him to represent Spain and that the support of the other athletes in the Olympic village had been fantastic. He described the Olympic Gold as a unique sensation.
The confirmation of the Number One status comes on the ATP website where Nadal has been number two for the past 160 weeks.
The Spaniard’s achievements this year also include his first win on the grass of Wimbledon showing his range as a player, and now the excitement continues with the U.S. Open.
