The order comes in a provisional ruling from the U.K's Competition Commission.

The Spanish owner of the BAA, British Airports Authority, has been told to sell three of the seven airports they own in the United Kingdom. The provisional decision of the Competition Commission is harsher than expected and comes because of the almost monopoly situation of BAA, owned by Ferrovial.
It could mean they have to lose two of the airports in London, and a third in Scotland.

There now opens a period of appeals which will end in March next year when the ruling will be enforced if no changes have been made in the meantime.

The Competition Commission considers that there is a lack of competition between airports in the SE of England in particular, and that this has been having negative consequences for both passengers and airlines. However a statement from Ferrovial said that simply selling the airports was no guarantee of an improvement in competition.

The Competition Commission also wants to see changes and improvements in how airports are regulated in Britain.
