The order is for four of the accused, but it is understood that the Instruction Judge is now to lift all the fines imposed in the Astapa Case.

The Second Section of Málaga Provincial Court has ordered the judge instructing the Astapa corruption case in Estepona, Isabel Conejo, to lift all the economic fines she had imposed against four people charged in the case.

The court also ordered that the bank accounts of the four be un-frozen, and reports indicate that the Instruction Judge is now to lift all the financial penalties imposed against all the accused in the case as a result.

Several defence lawyers had considered that the financial penalties had been imposed against their clients ‘indiscriminately’, and they hope that reporting restrictions in the case would also be lifted shortly.

There are currently 39 people facing charges in the case including the ex Socialist Mayor of Estepona, Antonio Barrientos, who remains in prison on remand.
