Many of the papers in Spain lead again on the Madrid plane crash. A week on we now know much more information about what happened to the Spanair flight.

Many papers, such as El País have a photo of the tracks left by the wheels of the jet by the side of the runway at Barajas airport in Madrid.
El Mundo headlines that the plane only caught fire after bouncing along the ground for hundreds of metres.
El Páis has the same photo, and notes that the MD-82 hit the ground with its tail firstly and then travelled some 1,200m
ABC tells us that the pilot did not communicate any problems to the control tower during the failed take off. The paper says the statements of 10 air traffic controllers have been taken by the Civil Guard.
The paper notes the press conference given to the press by one of the survivors of the crash – Beatriz Reyes. She gets praise in many papers for the way she handled herself and helped others in the crash and since then.
Público gives her pride of the front page and notes her comments that the take off seemed slower than usual. The paper also reveals that the very same plane had to abort a take off in Palma a month ago, because of a strange noise from the undercarriage. The paper claims that Spanair hid that problem and not will not say if the plane had any other problems.
Público also notes that 26 people were hurt when a Ryanair flight from Bristol heading for Girona depressurised half an hour out, and fell 8,000m in five minutes.

EL Mundo notes that Emilio Rodríguez Menéndez is on the run again, thanks to a jail permission he was granted by a judge. The man, a lawyer, is well known in Spain for his criminal past, where he has been facing ten years in jail for tax fraud.

In international stories, El Mundo notes that Russia is standing up to the United States and to Europe, by recognising the independence of Osetia and Abjasia.
El País leads with the situation and notes that the Russian Prime Minister, Medvédev has said that he does not fear a new cold war.
The paper says that the United States and Europe have accused Russia of violating international laws.
ABC says what is happening is a challenge to NATO.

There is much coverage of the Democratic Party Congress, with El Mundo noting that Hillary has asked for support for Obama, but that her team still continues to criticise the candidate.
El País notes that the Clintons have eclipsed Obama at the start of the conference and says that the supports of Clinton are resisting accepting her defeat.

Back in Spain, El Mundo continues with its series on 30 years of democracy in Spain with an interview with Jordi Pujol. The veteran Catalan politician says that the relationship between Cataluña and the rest of Spain is worse than ever.

El País notes that the Council for Nuclear Safety in Spain, CSN, is to call on the nuclear power stations here to invest more in safety measures.

And finally,
El Mundo tells us today that Spain now has 2 million people aged over 80, and that most of them are women.
El País notes that means that the pensions system in the EU is in danger as the population generally gets older.
