The failing economy and more revelations about the Madrid plane crash lead to Spanish papers today.

There are more revelations about the Madrid plane crash, with El Mundo reporting that the reverse braking system of one of the engines was switched off three days before the tragedy.
A spokesman from the SEPLA pilots’ union tells the paper that the pilots landed the plane quite well, but that the drop 150 metres from the runway made the tragedy worse.
El País headlines that the MD-82 took off with a breaking system deactivated because of a breakdown. The reverse breaking system of the right engine was turned off three days before.
ABC leads with the news and says that two mechanics reported the failure of the hydraulic system on August 17.

El Mundo leads today with another instalment of their series looking at 30 years of democracy in Spain. It interviews the ex Prime Minister, José María Aznar, who tells the paper that he left as his inheritance the richest Spain in history.
Aznar also tells the paper that the Socialist Party will pay the price sooner or later ‘for their tremendous lack of loyalty after the March 11th Madrid train massacre’.
Aznar also says he does not regret that famous photo taken in the Azores of him with President Bush and Tony Blair, ahead of the Iraq invasion.

El País gives its main front page photo to Hillary Clinton who has told the Democratic Party Congress that they have to choose Barack Obama.

El Mundo has a front page photo of the José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero in a helicopter over Galicia looking at work on the new high speed train line. The paper headlines that investment has fallen for the first time in 12 years as consumer spending collapses. Zapatero says that Spain will return to notable growth, when worldwide circumstances allow. The paper says that although the GDP in Spain is higher than in neighbouring countries, so is the slowdown.
El País notes that the Minister for Tax and the Economy, Pedro Solbes, has reaffirmed his veto against the Catalan plans for regional funding.
ABC has the same photo of the Prime Minister on the helicopter and notes that bad weather meant he had to land in Vigo instead of Santiago. The paper says consumer demand, industry and construction have fallen to levels not seen since 1996.

In Cataluña El País reports that the regional government has accused the nuclear power companies of cutting back on security.

ABC tells us that the death of a woman in León is underway. It follows her son’s death from Mad Cow’s disease.

El Mundo notes that the General Council for Judicial Power is to investigate the judge responsible for the prison pass given to the lawyer R Menéndez, who has since done a runner.

In international stories, El País reports that the conflict between Russia and Georgia has extended to the waters of the Black Sea. The paper says the Russian navy is on alert with NATO ships in the area.
Público leads with the news and says the EU does not accept the independence of Southern Ossetia and Abkhazia, and that the 27 countries of the union will try to reach a common position at a meeting in Brussels on Monday.
