Europe pays 25million Euro for treatment of tourists in Andalucía

The money is paid via the European Health Cohesion Fund.

Europe is to pay 25 million € to the Andalucian Health Service, SAS, for the medical bills of tourists who have been treated in the region.

This summer the SAS has taken on 233 extra professionals, including 99 doctors, to meet the demand from tourists in coastal hospitals, and the money comes via the Health Cohesion Fund of the E.U.

The Spanish Ministry for Health pays Andalucía 65 million € for the treatment of so-called residential tourists, those often aged over 65 and with a second home in the region.

On the Costa del Sol most European tourists to use the health facilities are from Britain, 27%, followed by Germany, 5%. The latest data available, for 2006, shows that some 20,000 Europeans were attended to across Andalucía by the regional health service over the year.
