15,000 children aged four and five will not get English classes this new academic year in Alicante province.

More than 15,000 children in the province of Alicante are starting the new academic year without any English classes.

State law says that children should receive an hour and a half English class from the age of four and five, but the regional education authority in Valencia says it simply does not have enough teachers to give the classes.

It means that roughly half all local four and five year olds are having to do without English, according to a report printed in today’s edition of the Informacion newspaper.

National figures from the Ministry for Education show the Valencia region to be bottom in the country with 64.5% of children getting English classes when the national average is 81%.
