The Government's plans on abortion lead most of the papers in Spain today.
El Mundo leads with the news which broke on some media yesterday about the Spanair plane crash in Madrid last month.
The paper headlines that the wings were not ready for take-off and the pilot did not know. It says that neither the slats nor the flaps which are needed for take-off were correctly set. The black box records the that an alarm which should have sounded did not and the pilots confirmed ‘Flaps OK, Slats Ok’.
El Mundo says that in 1987 another MD-82 crashed for the same reason in Detroit and there was a vane recommendation to duplicate the warning system.
El Mundo reports on new medical advances against Cancer, and notes that the genetic make up of two of the most lethal tumours have now been mapped – that of the pancreas and the brain.
El Mundo says the Government has got more radical in the face of the crisis and announces a new abortion law. The paper claims that the Minister for Equality, Bibiana Aído, will form a commission made up of militant abortionists.
ABC leads with the story and says the Government is accelerating its plans for free abortion in the first weeks of pregnancy. The paper says that pro-life associations and those in defence of the family have complained about the impartiality of those who sit on the new commission to draw up the law.
Público devotes its front page to the story and says the Government wants free abortion in the first 21 weeks of pregnancy.
El Mundo says that the Minister for Employment and Immigration, Celestino Corbacho, has made an about turn and will now allow immigrants to work in Spain at harvest time.
El País does not report on such a U turn, but leads with the story that there is general rejection of the proposals made by Corbacho. It says that the opposition, unions and immigrants are all united against the Government.
ABC says the unions have accused Corbacho of blaming the immigrants for the increase in unemployment.
El País says that the title of Formacion Professional in Spain will now only be given after a three year practice time. There are 12 million Spaniards who aspire to the qualification according to the paper.
El Pais says that the scandal regarding Judge Tirado will be archived unless it is resolved in a month. He is the judge who has been fined just 3,000 € for forgetting to order the imprisonment of Santiago del Valle, who went on to kill Mari Luz Cortés in Huelva.
El País informs us that the National Court is looking for witnesses to the CIA secret flights which held stop-overs in Spain. The paper says the search for the witnesses is being concentrated on the Spanish military.
In international stories,
John McCain is quoted in El Mundo as saying that he has always collaborated with both parties and that he will govern in the same way when he is President.
El País has a photo of Sarah Palin, who the paper says has revitalised the republicans. She is shown holding Trig, her Down Syndrome child.
ABC has a photo of her hugging John McCain and says she seduced the republicans at the convention.
ABC says that the Governor of the European Central Bank, Jean Claude Trichet, sent the stock markets down yesterday after putting distance from a possible cut in interest rates.
And finally,
Back in Spain, El Mundo covers the tragedy of the two children, aged 3 and 5, who were burnt to death when left in a van in Cuenca.
