King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia attended the closure ceremony for the exhibition which took water as its theme.
It’s goodbye to the International Exhibition in Zaragoza which closed its doors over the weekend after a 93 day run.
The event saw long queues for many of the pavilions, but despite that visitor numbers were lower than forecast at 5.5 million instead of 6.5 million.
King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia attended the closing ceremony for the event which went under the slogan ‘Water and Sustainable Development’. The King said such events encouraged is to take on new projects together, and served to unite and build an always better Spain’.
The Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, led the other authorities at the closure. A business park and Institute for the study of Climate Change are planned for the site, on the banks of the River Ebro.
The next Expo will be held in Yeosu, South Korea in 2012.
