Army officer Luis Conde de la Cruz was killed by an ETA car bomb in Santoña, Cantabria in the early hours of yesterday.
Hundreds of people have spent the night in the Segovia Military Academy with the body of the army officer Luis Conde, the man who was killed by an ETA car bomb in Santoña, Cantabria on Sunday. Some 6,000 people demonstrated against ETA in the town yesterday.
The funeral for Luis Conde is planned for 10,30 this morning.
Around 1,000 local people turned out to pay their respects to his body forming a long queue waiting to enter the academy. The Deputy Prime Minister, María Teresa Fernández de la Vega was also in attendance, as was Mariano Rajoy, the leader of the opposition.
Meanwhile Army Captian José Manuel Martínez de Andrés, who was seriously injured in the same ETA attack, is expected to undergo surgery in hospital today for an open fracture to his femur.
The Ministry of the Interior meanwhile considers that ETA has tried to reform its Vizcaya cell, and in the face of three political support groups being declared illegal last week by the Supreme Court in Spain, are trying to step up their attacks, searching for more international coverage of their bombings.
There are also reports this morning that in addition to attacking the Basque regional police, La Ertzaintza, ETA have been planning a new attack in Madrid. Reports indicate a second command unit has arrived from France to set an attack in the capital.
The woman who was the leader of the Partido Popular in the Basque region, María San Gil, who resigned as leader following differences over policy with the party’s national leader, Mariano Rajoy, has now formally renounced her seat in the Basque Parliament. It means an effective end to her participation in politics and had been announced as her intention back in June. Many see her departure as a blow to the hard liners in the party.
