The financial crisis continues to dominate the Spanish papers this Monday morning.
El Mundo leads with the headline that the 500 € notes in circulation in Spain are the secret weapon of the Spanish economy.
The paper says the Government is looking at ways to get individuals to put the 108 million 500€ notes in circulation into the banks. The paper says that if only part of them are paid in then the financial system will recover its needed liquidity and can once again start giving business loans. However the Bank of Spain and some ministers are against any move which would be a financial amnesty for those who carried out real estate deals in black money.
The Socialists have commented that the criticism of the Partido Popular leader, Mariano Rajoy, who they say is destroying the confidence of the Spanish economy. The PP want the State to guarantee a 30 billion deposit fund.
El Mundo notes that Berlin is guaranteeing deposits after the collapse of a mortgage bank, Hypo Real Estate. The paper has a photo of Angela Merkel and notes that she has copied the measure which she earlier had criticised Ireland for carrying out.
El País leads with that and headlines Germany guarantees all the deposits. It says that the leading economic power in Europe has acted to avoid a panic in the bank branches. Meanwhile El País says that Luxembourg and Belgium are still fighting to save Fortis, and notes that the U.K. has promised more help for banks. ABC says that BNP are to take control of Fortis in Belgium and Luxembourg.
ABC also leads with the German guarantee for private savers and says that Berlin has now covered accounts worth 568 billion €.
La Vanguardia says the Government in Spain is debating whether to buy the debt from banks and savings banks also.
Público has the results of an opinion poll for the paper which has shown that the Spanish people are happy for the State to rescue banks, but not real estate companies. The poll shows that most think the crisis has been caused by easy credit conditions, business corruption and the bad management of companies.
El Mundo reports on the latest case of domestic violence in Santurce in the Basque Country, where the husband has confessed after a woman has been found dead with her hands and feet tied.
In international stories,
El Mundo notes that the Republicans are toughening up their campaign in an effort to stop the advance of Obama in the polls. There are 29 days to go to voting.
El País has a front page photo of Sarah Palin who is, according to the paper, showing her teeth. It comes as she said that Obama meets with terrorists at a rally in California.
El País notes that the United States government has justified the stop over prisoner flights in Spain, some 13 between the years 2003 and 2007, as logistic support from Spain.
ABC has a front page photo of the Pope. Benedict XVI was opening the World Bishops Synod and told them that faith would never be extinguished. ‘If it weakens in some regions, there will always be other new ones happy to accept it’, he said.
El País notes that Pakistan is sliding into chaos. The paper considers that the paralysation of the government there has led the country to the edge of decomposition.
El Mundo claims there was an attempt to censure a speech from the AVT, Association of Terrorism Victims, in the United Nations, because the paper claims, of their criticism of the talks with ETA.
El País notes plans from the Ministry of the Interior in Spain to widen the compensation and scope for victims of terrorism.
ABC has an interview today with the Socialist leader in the Basque Country, Patxi López. He tells the paper that he will not govern in coalition with the Basque Nationalist Party if Juan José Ibarretxe remains with them.
Público notes that Gaspar Llamazares has brought forward his resignation as leader of the left wingers Izquierda Unida. The paper says its because of continued criticism against him.
El Mundo notes that Fernando Torres continues to shine at Liverpool – with two goals in the Premier League.
And finally,
As El País puts it, El ‘Speak Spanish’ truinfa en the United States. The paper says there are now more Spanish speakers in the United States than in Spain.
