A group of twenty men had previously been found guilty of terrorist offences by the Spanish National Court last February.

The Spanish Supreme Court yesterday found 14 of the 20 Islamists condemned last February in the National Court on terrorist charges, not guilty.

The case is the so-called ‘Operación Nova’ against Islamic terrorism, and the group had previously been found guilty of planning to explode a lorry carrying explosives outside the National Court building in Madrid. Other objectives of the group were said to be the Príncipe Pío railway station and the headquarters of the Partido Popular.

The Supreme Court however also reduced the sentence from one of the main accused in the case from nine to two years in prison.
The case follows a police operation in 2004 which initially saw 32 arrests although later two were released without charge.

Finally 20 of the group were found guilty in the National Court, but now that number is down to just seven following the deliberations of the Supreme Court.
