A series of investments and improvements are planned to add to the new second runway.
The San Javier airport in Murcia could be offering commercial flights around the clock in a month’s time.
The opening of a second runway and a new control tower is expected to coincide with the visit of the Minister for Development, Magdalena Álvarez, although no date has yet been fixed.
The airport has been a military base since it was established 60 years ago, but last year saw nearly two million passengers, 21% more than in 2006.
Now a new passenger terminal costing 32 million is planned to be built between 2009 and 2012 together with 10 million being spent on new parking.
