Spain Papers Review - Wednesday October 15 2008
By h.b. - Oct 15, 2008 - 9:48 AM
Today's ABC front page.

The financial crisis on both sides of the Atlantic leads the papers today.
El País leads with the headline today that Bush has partially nationalised the large banks in the United States. The paper says the Federal Reserve will make a massive purchase of shares worth 183 billion, and that the State will back the debt of the banks for three years.
El Mundo notes that Wall Street lost 0.82% yesterday, where as European markets gained yesterday.
Mariano Rajoy and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero are shown shaking hands on the stops of the Moncloa Palace yesterday, in a front page photo in El País.
The paper says that Rajoy has accepted Zapatero’s anti-crisis plan in exchange for more control. The two leaders also reported to be negotiating reforms to guarantee pensions.
El Mundo has a similar front page photo and notes Rajoy is demanding the money goes to families and small businesses. The paper says that the Toledo Pact is meeting to ‘guarantee the future of the pensions system’.
ABC headlines that Zapatero and Rajoy have agreed that the Bank of Spain should manage the rescue plan, and says that Rajoy has justified his support for the government because of the ‘exceptional situation’.
ABC notes that the SIMO technology fair will not be held this year – suspended because of the crisis in its 48th edition.
El Mundo notes that Obama is now 14 points ahead of McCain in the last United States poll for the New York Times and CBS, and this with just three weeks to go.
La Vanguardia considers that the McCain campaign has deflated.
ABC reports that Zapatero has put his trip to Cuba in doubt, just hours after it had been announced by his Foreign Minister, Sr. Moratinos. The paper says that that the Cuban chancellor, who has denied there are ideological prisoners on the island, has managed to get more funding from Spain.
El País gives coverage of the birth of the first genetically chosen baby in Spain, here to help save the life of his older brother.
El Mundo describes the baby as being between a miracle and controversy. It says the scientific community have celebrated the birth as an advance to cure illnesses, but also notes the Church has already issued statements about the embryos which are thrown away during the process.
El Mundo tells us that two P.P. deputies from Murcia have voted against the new Statute for Castilla-La Mancha.
ABC says that there will be a million new unsold flats in Spain by the end of the year, but notes that despite the glut, housing has fallen in price by only 4.9%.
El Mundo has a picture of a woman in a skimpy pair of knickers and says the image will not be seen in Madrid. The poster for a new film has been banned on the buses apparently.
And finally,
There is an interesting take on the problems for Atlético Madrid in El Mundo. The paper considers the side is the victim of a row between UEFA and the Spanish police. The paper says the similarity between two skull symbols, that of the Marseille supporters on the one hand, and a Nazi symbol is the origin of the dispute according to the paper.
ABC notes the Government is supporting the team and the police.
