It follows the birth of Javier in Sevilla this week, chosen so stem cells from his umbilical cord can treat his ill six year old brother.
The Spanish bishops have issued a statement against the medical advance which has led to a recently born baby in Sevilla, as a result of embryo selection, being able to save the life of its older brother by the use of umbilical cord stem cells.
The church condemned the procedure as ‘the baby’s brothers had been killed’ in reference to the discarded embryos. Despite the position of the church, the majority of Spanish people are in favour of the use of embryos to cure illnesses.
