Today's ABC front page.

Financial stories dominate the Spanish front pages this morning.El Mundo tells us that the Banif bank, the private banking arm of Santander, invested in Lehman Brothers because of the high commission rates they obtained as a result. The paper says they got 2% if they placed their clients money in structured funds and only 0.3% if they purchased shares. The bank had a goal of obtaining 25% more in commissions this year, according to El Mundo.
El País reports that Congress has asked for more details from 67 deputies about their private income. The paper says that only 45 of the 350 deputies in Spain have that as a single job.
El Mundo leads with the contents of an interview the paper has carried out with the President of the Chambers of Commerce in Spain. Gómez Navarro is also an ex Socialist minister and warns the paper that absenteeism in the workplace has doubled in the past three years. He says that unions have to be convinced to stop protecting the lazy.
The Minister for Employment and Immigration has said it is a scandal that someone retires at 48 or 52. The sacking of workers under the ERE scheme cannot be used to get rid of older workers, to take on youngsters at a lower rate, says the Minister.
El País says that the state help for housing is to be extended into the high end rental sector, and that new plans restrict the grants for so-called ‘mini-flats’.
ABC says that a lack of control on the new Dependency Law has resulted in what they say is a hidden PER – referring to a previous agricultural subsidy. This because Andalucía has 40% more of the claims under the new law.
El Mundo has a photo of the latest person to make his escape from the FARC guerrillas in Colombia. The ex member of the Colombian congress, Oscar Tulio Lizcano got out after walking for three days in the forest.
El País also has a photo and the caption ‘I knew they were going to shoot me’.
ABC also has a photo and the caption ‘The end of eight years of torture’.
ABC tells is that the Pope will be making his first trip to Africa in March.
El País notes that Israel is to call elections after Tzipi Livni failed in her attempts to form a government.
El Mundo continues its campaign to defend Castellano, and today reports that parents at the school where the King opened the academic year are criticising Español being excluded.
ABC reveals that the Ministry for the Interior has ‘lost’ 2,000 missing people in nine months. The paper says it’s not known what has happened, or who was guilty.
And finally,
Público leads with the US election campaign, and concludes that only hidden racism can now stop Obama. The paper notes that 44% of non-Hispanic whites now support him.
