By h.b. - Oct 30, 2008 - 9:48 AM
A mixture of finance and corruption allegations on the Spanish front pages today.
El Mundo leads with the revelation that less than half of the Socialist deputies attended the morning session of the debate on the crisis and unemployment. The paper says that absenteeism is increasing in Congress, with just 160 deputies at the start of Prime Minister’s questions yesterday, full of items on the economic situation.
El Mundo notes that the IBEX 35 rose 9.42% yesterday, its second highest increase in a single day. It came as the Federal Reserve cut interest rates in the United States by half a point.
El País covers the rally in the stock market and notes that Brussles is presenting a new rescue plan for the real economy.
Público leads with the Brussels plan, and says that the European Commission has made a call to the Governments to help those in need and has announced a bringing forward of cohesion funds.
El Mundo reports that the Bank of Spain has called on Spanish banks to slim down their profits. The Governor of the Bank of Spain, Fernández Ordóñez, has recommended the banks to spend more money making provisions rather than profits at a time they may take advantage of the Government’s rescue plan.
ABC reports that a Spanish missionary has been seriously injured in the Congo. Presentación López has lost both her legs in the chaos and bombs of Africa.
El País reports and leads with the family accounts of Carlos Fabra, the head of the Partido Popular in Castellón. The paper says that there are dozens of payments made into the account with no justification. The monies double and even triple his official wage.
ABC on the other side of the political divide, notes that the Catalan leader Carod, collected expenses of 21,000 € for his journeys despite the fact that he uses the official car.
ABC also looks at the village of Berriozar, which it describes as a ghetto as the local residents are rebelling against the Basque language by announcing they speak Castellano.
El País also notes that the Socialist Mayor of San Fulgencio has been arrested, the paper says for simulating a bribery.
El Mundo says that El Salvador wants Zapatero to be the spokesman for the Latin American block at the G20 summit in Washington. One way of getting him through the door.
El País has a photo of Michelle Obama, arm raised in the air during the campaign. The paper says she has been spending all her energy to get the votes needed for change in the United States.
El Mundo has a photo of Catalan independents celebrating in Madrid yesterday after 16 of them were released after being accused of burning photos of the King in September in Girona.
The paper says the prosecutor put forward the dropping of the charges.
El País reports that the first citizenship exam in English in the Valencia region has been failed by 99% of the students. Only two of 201 students passed the paper, and the paper reports that they are British anyway.
And finally,
El País takes a look at the confessions of Queen Sofia which have been published in a book to celebrate her 70th birthday. ‘Gays can get marry each other’, she says, ‘but this should not be called marriage’.
