The papers play catch up with the result of the United States presidential election today.
El Mundo has a picture of a waving Barack Obama and the headlines – A new era starts. The paper says that world leaders see the triumph of Obama as an opportunity to redefine the international order. While Europe, Latin America and the Arab countries have reacted with enthusiasm, Russia has not commented except to place missiles on its border with Poland.
El Mundo notes that Zapatero has offered Spain as ‘a friend and faithful ally’ and that opposition leader Mariano Rajoy has said that Obama’s victory can be measured by the grandness of his rivals.
El Mundo translates and prints the entire Obama acceptance speech given in Chicago.
El Mundo notes however that Wall St. fell by 5.05% as profit takers moved in after the increases seen before the poll.
El País says that change has arrived in America and has a picture of Obama embracing his wife. The paper says the international community has applauded the victory, and that it has brought a wave of enthusiasm to the United States, and a wind of hope across the world. El País notes that he won in the traditionally republican states of Florida, Ohio and Indiana.
ABC headlines that Obama has called for unity and alliances in the face of the crisis and wars.
The paper describes him as the President with most votes in history, and notes he won 8 states won by Bush in 2004. The paper notes the general vote was 53% to 46%.
La Vanguardia says that Obama is already preparing his government of change, and also that he has come down to earth.
El Periódico de Catalunya notes that the victor has 76 days before he takes over the country with an economic crisis and immersed in two wars.
Little in the way of other stories:
El Mundo reports that the PSOE and the PP are tied in the intention to vote in Spain according to the latest survey and that the new party led by Rosa Díez, which the paper supports, is now up to a 3% share.
Carme Chacón, Spain’s defence minister, takes over from Maria Teresa Fernández de la Vega as the most valued personality in the Government.
ABC notes the government has lost 4% support in the survey from the CIS.
ABC reports that the government wants to create a ‘social tariff’ for the price of Butano gas, before its price is fully liberalised. Those families with the cheaper electricity tariff will be eligible.
