The British publication critices the Spanish regions in general and Cataluña in particular.

The Generalitat regional government in Cataluña has demanded an apology from the British magazine ‘The Economist’ for what they consider to be an insulting article.

The article criticises the Spanish regions in general and the nationalist pretentions of Cataluña in particular calling Jordi Pujol the cacique of the region, and saying that the Catalan language has become an obsession. The magazine contends that with all the nationalist and regional activity, all Spain can do is ‘muddle on’.

The Catalan government considers that the authors of the article have shown their ignorance of the Catalan reality.

Government delegate in London, Xavier Solano, has sent a letter to the editor, describing the piece as ‘unfortunate’ and ‘inacceptable’.
