A mixture of stories and photos on the Spanish front pages today.
El Mundo headlines that Zaptero is going to the economic summit in Washington to fight the battle against ‘neo-liberalism’. The paper quotes a document which was sent between members of the Socialist party executive blaming the crisis on the neo-liberal ideology applied by Reagan and Thatcher, and which Aznar joined too.
El Mundo notes that the United States has changed its rescue plan, and will now take capital in banks and companies.
La Vanguardia considers that the U.S. has admitted that its rescue was not working. The paper also reports that George W Bush has admitted making mistakes, but has defended his policy in Iraq.
El Mundo has a report from the Congo where the paper says a new war is emerging with the entry of troops from Angola. They have a front page photo of two soldiers.
El País also has a photo from the Congo today, and says the war there is threatening to extend across the region.
El Mundo takes some delight in the article published in The Economist magazine in the U.K. which criticises the nationalists in Spain in general, and in Cataluña in particular. The paper interviews the author of the article, Mike Reid, who asks the question – ‘How would anyone go to Cataluña of their children have to be educated in Catalan’.
El Mundo tells us that the Spanair plane abandoned a take off a month before the tragedy in Madrid in August, because of a loud noise heard on that take off.
Many papers cover the arrest of two ETA terrorists on France, on their bicycles. El País reports that the arrests came 60 kms. from the border with Andorra.
ABC leads with an offer from the Basque nationalist party EA to those who support ETA to lead a new candidate list. The party wants to be the third largest in the region.
El Mundo reports that Moscow has announced, in surprise, that Gazprom wants to buy Repsol. The paper says they want the 20% which has been put on the market by Sacyr, and that plans have been presented to Zapatero. Minister for Industry here, Miguel Sebastian has said that Government does not give an opinion on a private operation.
El País chooses to lead with the news and says that with the 20% the Russian energy giant would become the largest shareholder in the Spanish company.
ABC notes that Spain has slipped ten places from 10th to 17th on the equality of the sex’s index. The paper notes that the budget of 113 million for the new Minister for Equality, Bibiana Aído, has done little.
Staying with costs, ABC also notes that the PP has described as ‘immoral’ the spending of development funds on the artwork of Barceló at the United Nations building in Brussels.
El País has a worrying report on new corrosion, of an unknown origin, found in the Ascó nuclear plant near Tarragona. The discovery comes after the leak at the plant last year. The paper says identifying where the problem is isn’t easy given the 100,000 metal pipes and 50,000 valve systems.
And finally,
ABC has a large photo of Congress yesterday during a debate on Afghanistan. Very few deputies on the rows of seats – the paper says that is insensitive coming as it does just days after two Spanish soldiers lost their lives there.
