The arrest of the ETA leader ‘Txeroki’ came too late to make the Spanish papers this morning.
El Mundo takes a look at the expected appearance at a court in Belfast today of the ETA activist, Iñaki de Juana Chaos, who is now subject of an international search and detention order.
The paper talks to IRA victims who plan to demonstrate at the court, and highlights one comment – ‘A man who has killed 25 people should never be allowed back on the street’.
ABC says that the hope of peace has arrived in the Congo. It reports that the rebel leader Nkunda has undertaken to respect the United Nations initiative and cease fire.
El Mundo highlights the take on the Washington summit by the Socialist spokesman in Congress, José Blanco.
He says ‘The message from the summit has been ‘more state and less market’’. He says the summit agreed to increase public spending, and that the measures of the Spanish government will go along those lines.
The PP have criticised that Zapatero was not there under the Spanish flag, which was not flying at the event.
El País headlines that Spain is demanding to be included in the forum which will draw up the new financial regulations. The paper says the group will be made up of the G7 countries and five more. El País notes that Obama has promised measures to avoid mortgage embargoes.
El País has a dramatic front page photo of the forest wild fires devastating California. The paper says that three fires have destroyed hundreds of homes in the Los Angeles area and more than 50,000 people have been evacuated.
El País notes that Iraq has approved that the United States troops leave the country in December 2011. The date was passed by the Baghdad government.
ABC says that the crisis and unemployment have given rise to a massive increase in the number of applications to join the army in Spain. Applications are 4.5 times higher.
Público reports that the fear of unemployment has resulted in Spaniards liking their current jobs more. An opinion poll for the paper shows 83% satisfied with their current job, and 73% admitting they would find it difficult to find a new one.
El Mundo highlights the attack by three doormen which resulted in the death of an 18 year old outside a club in Madrid on Saturday. The paper has a photo from the funeral of the youngster, and highlights that the bouncers have 12 charges of aggression between them.
The paper notes also that police had proposed the discothèque be closed a month ago.
More bad news from the Spanish construction industry is highlighted in El Mundo as the Tremón Group has presented the biggest insolvency since Martinsa-Fadesa. The Madrid company has 1,000 workers and can no longer face the 900 million € debt it has amassed.
El País looks at what it sees as the unequal access to vaccines in Spain, with each region having a different calendar for the jabs. The paper says that paediatricians are calling for a unified plan.
El País reports that IU left wing coalition is proving unable to elect a new leader to replace the departing Gaspar Llamazares. The paper says the Spanish Communist Party has a ‘precarious majority’ in the group. Público highlights the IU lack of leader.
And finally,
Publico dedicates its front page to the news that the Guardia Civil yesterday stopped a group of some 100 far right Falange members gaining access to the Valley of the Fallen monument. They wanted to go to pay their respects on the anniversary of the death of José Antonio Primo de Rivero and Francisco Franco – November 20.
