A whole range of headlines today, but continued concerns on the state of the Spanish economy.

El País leads by saying that the brusque slowdown in consumer spending has accelerated the fall into recession. The paper reports that the Government, the Bank of Spain, and the OECD are predicting a long crisis.

The paper says the 20% holding from Sacyr will be transferred in days and it is after another 10% in the hands of La Caixa and Caixa Catalunya. Meanwhile the paper tells us that the Minister for Industry, Miguel Sebastián, wants Repsol to remain ‘private, independent and Spanish’.
Público puts the story on its front page, and headlines that ‘La Caixa and Sacyr are negotiating the sale of Repsol to the Russians. The paper says the deal will be for about 27 € a share – double the current market value, but the Spanish government does not like the deal which is already well advanced.

El Mundo leads today with the headline that Zapatero has been praising the democracy of the United States because ‘it illuminates us all’. The statement from the Spanish Prime Minister was made at the ceremony to award the El Mundo prizes, which were also attended by the leader of the opposition Mariano Rajoy, and the P.P. President of the Madrid region, Esperanza Aguirre. The paper has a photo of the P.M. and the leader of the opposition.

El País reports that the top courts in Spain consider a legal process against Franco, as suggested by Judge Baltasar Garzón, is in fact not viable. 100 intellectuals have meanwhile signed a petition asking that nothing be done.

El Mundo is among the papers to note that the genetic sequence of the Mammoth has now been completed – from DNA taken from a sample of hair in Siberia. It’s the first extinct animal.

ABC has a photo of King Juan Carlos on a visit to the Basque Country yesterday. The monarch praised businessmen in the region for their ‘bravery’ and said that it was his ‘deep conviction’ that it was possible to win the battle against ETA.

El País has a large front page photo of the famous ETA activist arrested in France this week – Txeroki. The paper notes that the new appearance of the man has little in common with the photo which had been plastered across the media.
