Heavy snowfalls are forecast in areas of the South East of the country.

The cold spell in Spain continues with the south of the country on alert for cold today.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency has issued orange alerts for the areas of Madrid, Valencia, Murcia, Alicante and Almería today where high winds and snow are expected. Snowfall in parts of Almería is forecast to reach some six centimetres today. In Murcía the depth could reach ten centimetres.

The snowline will be over 700/1000m in the South East of the mainland, with the north and centre of the country continue to see moderate freezing.

The area of the Strait is on yellow alert as are Cueta, Málaga and Melilla where heavy rain is forecast – up to 20mm in an hour in places.

In Málaga the cold spell has brought the first snows to the province and saw temperatures fall to zero in Ronda and in part of Antequera.

The storm will move on tonight, but a new front will bring heavy rain and new storms with high winds to the Costa del Sol from late on Friday night and lasting over the weekend to Monday.
