Port traffic is down 25% compared to last year.
Alicante port has suffered a dramatic fall in activity this year compared to last and is now just sixth from bottom in the list of 28 Spanish ports. Only the ports of Motril, Villagarcía de Arosa, Marín, Ceuta y Melilla have less activity.
For the year to September activity in Alicante was 25% down, but the fall in the movement of heavy goods such as clinker was down 32% as the port is hit by the economic slow down in general and the halt in the construction industry in particular.
Container traffic is 12% down on the year, and links to the Balearics have been lost with the exit of the Grupo Boluda. Trasmediterránea has also suspended its service from the port to Algeria.
