The six metre tall bronze statue of the dictator on horseback had been in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento since 1964.
What is believed to be the last statue in mainland Spain of fascist dictator, Francisco Franco, has been removed from its plinth in Santander.
Many people turned out in the rain to see the crane lift the six metre tall bronze statue of Franco on horseback away from where it has stood since July 24 1964 in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Some said it was an historic moment.
Eventually the statue will be taken to the Cantabria Museum. It is the work of José Capuz and is identical to two others which used to stand in Madrid and Valencia.
Another statue still standing on the Spanish north African enclave of Melilla is also set for removal, but there is no date set as yet.
