The unfolding tragedy in Gaza leads most of the Spanish papers today.
El País has a front page photo of the relatives grieving over the bodies of three children from the same family, killed in the Israel bombardment against the town of Rafah. The paper headlines ‘Total War against Hamas’
It says at least 350 have died in Gaza after the third day of bombings.
El Mundo has a similar but different photo – the bodies of five Palestinian sisters who died next to a mosque in a bombardment yesterday. The paper says the attack was directed against an alleged Hamas base in the mosque. The mother of the girls managed to escape with her three other smaller children.
ABC thinks that Gaza is waiting for the Israeli invasion.
Público headlines ‘Tragedy in Gaza’ and says the attacks from Israel are killing women and children and punishing a people who do not have medicine or food. That said the paper highlights a quote from Ehud Barak, Israeli Defence Minister – ‘Our offence does not go against civilians’.
La Vanguardia says that the United States is blaming Hamas for the Israeli attack.
El Periódico says that Israel has proclaimed war ‘until the end’.
El Mundo has an exclusive article from the Prime Minister who writes about the paper’s Man of the Year, Barack Obama. He tells the paper that a progressive global agenda is not imaginable without the impulse of the United States.
The paper also highlights a quote from Obama – ‘When the Americans know they have the power to change things, it’s very difficult to stop them’.
El País reports on the queues in La Habana, Cuba, where the people are wanting to be Spanish. Grandchildren of those who left Spain in the Civil War can now apply for nationality.
ABC says the Government has taken the credit for the successes of Spanish sport in 2008. The cabinet says their management led to the triumphs in the Eurocup, Davis Cup, Tour and Giro, as well as a great performance from the Basketball team.
The paper says the Ministry for Development praises itself for the AVE high speed train, and forgets the delays.
El País says that Zapatero offers a new fund to try and reach a pact on the financing of the regions. The paper says the P.P. will oppose the plan, despite the fact that some of their regions have approved it.
ABC says the Basque Socialist party has supported the accounts of the PNV Basque Nationalist Party, despite the fact that they include help for ETA families.
El País notes that Caja Madrid wants to sack a key worker who is a close ally of Esperanza Aguirre, as the battle in the P.P. over the control of the second largest savings bank in Spain continues.
El País reports that Aguirre has said that Gallardón, her rival in this as in so many things, has not read the law controlling savings banks. The Mayor of Madrid does however count on the support of the party leader, Mariano Rajoy.
El Mundo notes that the average monthly mortgage payment will be down by 115 € as the Euribor interest rate continues to fall.
El País says that macho violence shot up over Christmas with six deaths since Christmas Eve. The paper says the past 24 hours have been especially grim with three deaths.
ABC says that last year’s tragic record has been beaten.
El País says that the cost of electricity is to increase in price by 3.4% on average for most consumers from Jan 1.
And finally
Público has a story about real estate speculation and says it is now threatening to reach the moon.
