The town of Lepe in Huelva, celebrated the New Year at 8pm on December 30.

New Year’s Eve has already been celebrated, 28 hours ahead of the rest of the country in Lepe, Huelva province. The town is often the butt of stupid people jokes in Spain, and maybe because of that some 4,000 people took to the streets of the town, filling the local Plaza de España in celebration to say goodbye to 2008.

Grapes were gobbled down, and artificial snow was brought in to add atmosphere. However the grapes were eaten and cava flowed at 8pm as a large screen showed a clock showed midnight.

But don’t think that is it for the people of Lepe. They’ll do it all again tonight.

Meanwhile in the Granada village of Colomera, the local council has decided that the local clock will chime 24 instead of 12 times at midnight tonight. Locals will have the job of eating 24 grapes in a tradition which was been carried out in the village for the past ten years.

All those who attend are given a voucher worth 40 € in local shops for the five ‘P’s – for panes, peces, perdices, peras and perniles. (Bread, fish, partridge, pears and ham).
