The vessel was flying the British flag without authorisation and many irregularities have been discovered.
A new oil spill has been detected along the coast at La Línea de la Concepción. It’s thought that the oil comes from the ‘Ropax 1’ which was in collision with a Cepsa buoy last December 13 in the waters of the Strait.
Ecologist group Verdemar Ecologistas en Acción, say the spill is an earlier one which had been trapped by rocks.
An inspection showed the ship was carrying 14 tons of fuel at the time of the accident, and that a second inspection revealed that the vessel had an illegally constructed container separate from its fuel tanks. It was flying the British flag, but apparently without authorization, and a British study has shown as many as 60 faults with the vessel.
The ‘Ropax 1’ remains on the Isla Verde dock in Algeciras Port and faces a possible 300,000 € fine.
